Thank you to everyone who supported our Spring Plant Sale at Rutgers Day on April 26th!
It was wonderful to see so many enthusiastic plant shoppers on Saturday, April 26th, even with rain in the forecast. We appreciate your flexibility as we moved the plant sale inside at the Floriculture Greenhouse so Rutgers Gardens could still meet alumni, students, faculty, staff, and friends on Rutgers Day, “the ultimate celebration of all things Rutgers.”
If you couldn’t make it to Rutgers Day, we’ll be selling some annuals and perennials at the Rutgers Community Farmers Market at Rutgers Gardens beginning Friday, May 16th from 11am to 3pm. The Rutgers Gardens Student Farm will have vegetable seedlings for sale. Please save the date on your calendars.
Read the Rutgers Today article here about the Rutgers Day updates made with the weather in mind. The event organizers provided a list of Frequently Asked Questions, which included information about parking, accessibility, and the programs found on the New Brunswick campuses.
We’d like to share our FAQ that will hopefully answer the questions you may have about the 2025 Rutgers Gardens Spring Plant Sale at the Floriculture Greenhouse, which took place on Saturday, April 26th from 10:00am to 4:00pm.
Were reservations or tickets needed for the plant sale on April 26th at Rutgers Day?
No tickets or reserved time slots were necessary. Rutgers Day is free and open to all.
Where is the Floriculture Greenhouse?
The Floriculture Greenhouse on the George H. Cook campus is not located within the main Rutgers Gardens site off Ryders Lane, but Rutgers Gardens oversees greenhouse operations there as part of our campus stewardship program.
What types of plants are for sale?
Rutgers Gardens is selling annuals and perennials. The annual flowers were planted and cared for by our students at the Floriculture Greenhouse. We are proud of their commitment to seeding, potting, watering, and helping these plants to thrive.

The perennial plants will bring you joy year after year. They were grown at local nurseries owned by Rutgers alumni and enduring friends of Rutgers Gardens, including Sunset Farmstead Nursery of Columbus, Steven Kristoph Nursery of Millstone, and Pleasant Run Nursery of Allentown.

Rutgers Gardens did not sell vegetables at Rutgers Day this year, but those were available at the Master Gardeners of Middlesex County sale on campus. Rutgers Gardens also collaborated with Rutgers Plant Biology inside the Floriculture Greenhouse, and we hope you enjoyed purchasing houseplants, tropicals, figs, and succulents from their sale.
Is there a list of the plants you’ll be selling that we can see in advance?
We are not providing a plant list in advance this year. Please be advised that quantities of all plant varieties are limited and may sell out quickly.
How does my plant sale purchase benefit Rutgers Gardens?
Proceeds support student opportunities for hands-on, experiential learning with Rutgers Gardens.
Will there be any other opportunities to purchase plants from Rutgers Gardens if I can’t make it to Rutgers Day?
Yes! We plan to sell remaining annuals and perennials at the Rutgers Community Farmers Market at Rutgers Gardens (aka Cook’s Market) beginning Friday, May 16th from 11:00am to 3:00pm. The Rutgers Gardens Student Farm will be selling vegetable seedlings at the farmers market.
Why did you decide to have the plant sale at Rutgers Day in April instead of at Rutgers Gardens in May?
We first made the announcement and provided some context for the decision to pivot our plant sale location in our January Friends of Rutgers Gardens e-newsletter, which you can read here.
We understand that this new plant sale location and timeframe is a big change! As part of our vision plan for the future of Rutgers Gardens and the strengthening of our ties as a unit of the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, we’re looking forward to our campus presence this year at Rutgers Day.
Thank you for your support of Rutgers Gardens!
