When shopping for plants, you may browse through the full catalog online. By clicking on the categories at the top of the page, you can view shorter, more manageable lists of different types of plants. You may also use the search bar on the page to look for specific plants either by common or scientific name, such as “dogwood” or “Cornus.”
You can add plants to your shopping cart by clicking the “add to cart” button below your selection directly from the catalog view. The default quantity added will be 1. Each individual listing can be clicked to view separately. In this individual view, you may indicate a quantity before adding the item to your cart. You can always adjust the quantities in your cart before checkout. You should also use the “back” arrow in your web browser to return to the catalog view from the individual view.
The numbered “page” icons and arrows at the bottom will navigate through additional items listed alphabetically in the catalog. Please note that plants appear in an overall alphabetical list; however we have listed them in a way that makes them easier to locate. So for example, woody perennials will be listed by their scientific names first, which are often how they are known commonly, but vegetables would be listed by their common name first. If in doubt or you cannot find a plant listed, use the search bar.
Once you have completed your shopping, click the “View cart” button at the top of the page, or the “View cart” link that appears next to the last catalog item you added to your cart. On the shopping cart page, you have the opportunity to make any changes to quantities. You can either click inside the quantity box and manually change the number or use the up and down arrows to adjust quantity. When you make quantity changes in the shopping cart, you MUST click the “Update cart” link at the bottom of the cart to update your order and show the correct subtotals. To remove a plant from your cart, change the order to 0 and click on “Update cart.” Not updating the cart will result in the original quantities placed in the cart remaining unchanged when the order is submitted. If you try to add a higher quantity than is available, an alert will pop up, telling you the remaining quantity. You will see the subtotal, sales tax, and total cost at the bottom. When finished, click the “Proceed to checkout” button. You may also click the link at the top or bottom to return to the plant sale and continue shopping before submitting your order.
On the checkout page, please fill in the required contact information and billing details. Be sure to double check that your email and phone number are correct! Your order details will be displayed at the bottom of the page, along with quantities. If there are any further changes necessary, you can click on the links at the top or bottom of the page to return to your shopping cart to adjust quantities or delete items, or to go back to the plant catalog and continue shopping. If your order is complete, click the “Place order” button at the bottom. You will not enter credit card information during this checkout. Please note that multiple orders will result in multiple invoices that will need to be paid separately. For your convenience and to help us simplify order processing, please try to consolidate your shopping into as few separate orders as possible.
Once an order has been submitted, you will receive a confirmation by email. Staff at Rutgers Gardens will be in touch via email with an invoice and a secure link to process your payment online. Depending on the number of orders, this might take a little while. After payment, we will reach out to schedule a specific pickup after May 7th, when you can come to Rutgers Gardens to pick up your plants. If for any reason we are unable to provide a plant you ordered, we will refund the cost of that plant. Otherwise all orders are final. All plants are non-returnable. We provide healthy plants but cannot guarantee successful growth after planting. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us by email. Thank you for your support!
