Bruce Hamilton, PhD
Bruce Hamilton arrived at Rutgers University in June of 1966 to teach classes on Plant Materials and Residential Landscape Design, which he passionately pursued until retiring in June of 2006. He was, first and foremost, a very gifted instructor who valued student education far and above advancing his own career, and he took great delight in teaching, mentoring, and guiding students into meaningful careers. From 1991 to 2005, he also served as the Director of Rutgers Gardens. He laid the groundwork for a university public garden which, much like Bruce himself, takes delight in teaching our visitors about plants.
The Hamilton Award
Launched at a national level in 2016, the Hamilton Award and accompanying monetary gift honors the very impactful and selfless efforts of Dr. Bruce Hamilton. Presented annually to an instructor or mentor in the field of professional horticulture, the award seeks to recognize those who embody the essence of educational selflessness by helping others to advance while placing personal ambition aside. To this end, the ideal nominee is not involved with horticulture for personal gain, but rather to share their passion of plants and the further advancement of those whose lives he or she graces.
The nominator must submit a letter of nomination detailing how the candidate has selflessly educated and influenced the lives of others through his or her love of plants. Accompanying the nomination letter, at least two seconding letters and the curriculum vitae for the candidate are requested. The documentation must be submitted to Rutgers Gardens by May 1, 2019. In nominating your candidate, please include the following information where applicable:
- Work history
- Plant society memberships
- Professional achievements
- Awards and honors
- Speaking experience, including radio, television, or YouTube presentations
- Information on how to contact the nominee
