The Rutgers Gardens Student Farm Internship immerses students in small-scale organic vegetable production, emphasizing practices that are ecologically sound, socially just, and economically viable. This 16-week, paid summer internship offers students an opportunity to participate in the farm’s commitment to a future rooted in sustainable agriculture and food systems.
Our interns are a key element of the farm and can expect to learn skills in crop planning, seeding, field preparation, planting, crop maintenance, pest and disease control, harvesting, and distribution. Applicants need to be able to perform physical labor on a daily basis, and must be able to work well independently and as a team. We value a cooperative relationship and look forward to working and learning with you side by side.
Students selected for this internship will work 37.5 hours per week and will receive tuition reimbursement for the 3-credit summer course, “Principles and Practice of Small-Scale Organic Farming,” offered through the Agriculture and Food Systems curriculum. Enrollment in this course is required to participate in the internship. This eight-week summer course provides hands-on experience in the field and instruction from experts in soil health, pest management, organic production, and more. Through weekly readings, discussions, farm visits, and field sessions, students will examine the connections between agriculture, food, and community systems. The goal of this course and the internship program is not only to educate Rutgers students about sustainable alternatives, but to inspire individuals to be agents of positive change as stakeholders in our food system.
