Vegetable gardening is a fun and rewarding hobby that can start in childhood and last a lifetime. Our Family Garden Club sessions are a great opportunity for children to learn the skills to grow their own vegetables and to develop a connection with nature and an appreciation of healthy, home grown foods.
Family Garden Club
Ages: 4-6 year olds with an adult (Adults attend for free)
7-12 year olds may attend without an adult
(children older than 12 should contact us about vegetable garden internship opportunities)
Dates: April 5, May 3, June 7, and June 21, 2014
Time: 9:30-11:30 am
Fee: $80.00 per child for 4 classes or $25.00 each class - 10% discount for siblings.
Rutgers Gardens Members receive an additional 10% discount
Location: Rutgers Gardens - meet at the Holly House
These hands-on classes will take place in the Rutgers Gardens greenhouse and community youth garden. Come dressed to garden! Activities will include:
Planning the Garden- choosing cool and warm weather crops; starting seeds
Planting the Garden- soil preparation; composting; plant spacing
Tending the Garden- mulching; watering; plant supports
Harvesting the Garden - harvesting; tasting; food preparation
Participants will also take home plants to grow in their own gardens and harvest vegetables to eat at home.
